History of Rotary International
Rotary is a non-profit NGO for business people and representatives of various professions throughout the world, concentrating its efforts on developing the society on a large scale. Rotary objectives are turning to provide humaritarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all fields of activity, help in maintain peace, build prosperity and good understanding of the relationships between nations.
The world`s first Rotary club was founded on February 23, 1906 in Chigaco-Illinois and had as main objective to encourage and promote the ideals of humanitarianism and altruism. Now, Rotary includes near 1,2 million members of both sexes, in 154 countries, in 35 geographical areas. Members come together under the logo of Rotary regardless of race, faith and political beliefs in an atmosphere of cooperation, understanding and friendship. Rotary clubs assume responsability to serve the public interest, to promote better understanding local, national and international.
Rotary in Romania
In 1929, Rotary ideals began to take root in Romania. At that time were created clubs in Bucharest and Timisioara, which have worked mainly focused on children`s health care and social integration of young people with disabilities or illness.
In 1936 was founded District 84 – Romania, romanian clubs operating until 1940 when they were closed by the regime of that time. During the interwar, romanian clubs activities have made Rotary clubs thrive on our land. The tradition broken by the vicissitudes of history resume in 1990, establishing the 2241 District for Romania and Republic of Moldova.
